HOW TO GIVE YOUR OLD PIANO AN UPDATED LOOK

How to give your old piano an updated look

Author: Naomi Middleton

Even though I don't play much anymore, I still love having a piano in the house. A few years ago my mother-in-law asked if I wanted their old piano. I was super excited because not only did the piano have sentimental value but I knew that a piano can be great versatile piece of furniture if used right. When we got our piano, we did a few things that helped to give it a more updated look that fit our house. Within a few hours and about $120 bucks, we had a beautiful refinished piano that has become one of my favorite pieces of furniture it our house. It is so much fun to decorate for every season and has been the perfect addition to our house. Here is what we did to update our piano...

SUPPLIES:

  • Sherwin Williams Extreme Bond Primer (1 Quart) $23.49 (Click Here)
  • Ikea SKOGSTA Bench, acacia, 47 1/4" $79.00 (Click Here)
  • Sherwin Williams SuperPaint Interior Acrylic Latex (1 Quart) $22.39 (Click Here)

DIRECTIONS:

  • Make to clean any dust off the exterior of the piano. If you piano has a really shiny surface, take some sandpaper and gently buff the top layer of old paint or stain.
  • Next, apply a thin layer of primer to the whole piano. Make sure to wait until it is completely dry before continuing on to the next step.
  • Once the primer is completely dry, apply the first coat of paint. If you have a really dark colored piano, you may need to apply a second coat of paint. We painted the entire exterior of our paino and then waited a few weeks before painting around the keys. This way the paint had time to cure before we opened the piano.
  • Wait at least 2 weeks before heavily using your piano. It is so important to let the paint cure in order to reduce scratching.
  • Lastly,  add some fun touches (like a new bench or new knobs). This really added a lot to our piano!
